About the role
A DevOps or Cloud Engineer helps development teams build, deploy and maintain applications without having to worry about the underlying infrastructure. The work usually involves managing Linux servers, configuring cloud services, setting up deployment pipelines and making sure applications remain available.
Depending on the company, you could be working with cloud platforms like AWS or Azure, managing Docker containers, automating repetitive tasks or investigating issues when something goes wrong in production.
These roles are found in software companies, IT service providers, startups and businesses that run their own applications and infrastructure.
A good DevOps engineer is comfortable working with Linux, understands networking and enjoys solving infrastructure problems. You don't necessarily need to know every cloud tool, but you should understand how systems work and be willing to learn new technologies.
Responsibilities
- Set up and maintain Linux servers and cloud infrastructure.
- Build CI/CD pipelines to automate application testing and deployment.
- Configure and manage cloud resources, storage, networking and access permissions.
- Work with Docker and other containerisation technologies.
- Automate infrastructure tasks using tools such as Ansible or Terraform.
- Monitor system performance, uptime and resource usage.
- Investigate deployment failures and resolve infrastructure issues.
- Maintain backups, security updates and access controls.
